Tyler Perry: The Secret to His Success

Posted Oct 24th 2007 4:09PM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

While last week's box office take of less than $20 million dollars for '30 Days of Night' was enough to beat Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get Married?' for the number one spot at the box office, media pundits are wondering how Tyler Perry managed to grab the number one spot in the first place, earning more than $20 million dollars during the opening weekend of his film. In addition, 'Why Did I Get Married?' has had less than a 50% drop off in revenue during its second week out, no small task in a business of fickle audiences. How has an African-American actor, writer, and producer who is not really a household name managed to pull such numbers?

Some have referred to Tyler Perry as 'Hollywood's best kept secret,' which strikes me as a funny tag for a person who's had a fan base for years through his plays. He was able to exploit that fan base for not only his first film, 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman,' but also for his second, 'Madea's Family Reunion.' Both of those films captured over $20 million at the box office, at a time when other films were expected to do better than them. Perry's films have grossed $145 million total so far.

Lionsgate Films, which backs Perry, knows a cash cow when it sees it, and they continue to produce Perry's films to much success with little marketing. When his most recent previous film, 'Daddy's Little Girls' failed to achieved the same numbers his other films have, the media was there to attack Perry and say that he's lost his touch. With 'Why Did I Get Married?' grabbing attention, this time from a wide audience, the press is in love with him again. But they just can't figure out how he does it.

What's the secret to his success? There really isn't one. One of the reasons Perry has been able to capture the attention of many, first in his plays and now in his movies, is that he creates what hasn't been pitched to the masses in slick, big-budget Hollywood films. Perry's movies instill family values, sometimes using words with religious sentiments. Perry is also a business man who knows how to capture markets that have gone under-served. Women tend to go to movies in droves if you give them what appeals to them. They want to see stories that they can relate to and men they can love. It also helps when you have actors who are also musicians like Janet Jackson and Jill Scott, that women identify with or even revere as icons. At a time when Hollywood seems to make mostly films for kids and young males, a Tyler Perry film is a rare movie that appeals to mature, modern women.

Starting as an actor and playwright, Perry is now a media force to reckon with. Not only is his TV show 'House of Payne' a hit on cable, but everything he produces seems to be working now for the big screen as well. A broader audience is starting to realize that.

'Why Did I Get Married?' is a universal film that appeals to all seeking the sensitive expression of human values regardless of what color the actors are on the screen.

2. Without a doubt, TP is coming into his own, on his own terms! Pity the fool that's jealous of his success, as it's hard won! I can just imagine what's next for him! I wish him the very best! And he should continue to surround himself with those who have the same kinds of "visions" as he! His plays and movies are "tight" and "right"!

3. What's the secret to his success
Dude, it's his lips. He be trading off of that irresistible African American trait. And, Why not? He's putting out the Christian line (marriage = sacred). Keep your marriage goin', even if she don't like sex and you get it maybe once a year......Even if she put you down in every social circumstance every 20 minutes.....OK, if he all-out doggin' you, physically abusing you, you have Tyler's permission to call it quits. And you will find some African American Forestry Ranger desolated up in White-Country, who starved for the love of a sistah of any size.
If only it were so easy.

5. We have seen everything TP has ever done. We are a white family and find TP's movies and plays wholesome entertainment for any race. Love and hope belongs to all of us just as God and faith. TP reaches out to the human heart with all its flaws, its beauty, its dreams, and its courage to do better. Hats off to a remarkably talented man. God bless him in all his endeavors. All young men of all races should aspire to do as well.

6. Movie critics make me sick, I love it when they say a movie will be a flop and it makes big bucks. In regards to Tyler Perry is making movies that have values of what this nation was founded on, and that is family. This nation was founded under the creed, One nation under GOD. Some law makers that are so PC seem to have forgot this but not this man. His movies are REAL, how many times have you heard people say, "why did I get married?" His movies are real and his plays are funny yet they still have a message. Give him time and you will see him get an Oscar and Emmy. And to all of the movie critics, take a long walk off of a short peer.

7. There is really no secret as to why he is so successful. He tells you in any sit down interview. He does what he does, GOD'S way. I have enjoyed all of his work. He is a Christian man, and Hollywood wanted nothing to do with his work, because he refused to compromise. He walked away from the money. Just like Mel Gibson. No body in Hollywood thought his movie would go anywhere, so no sponsers. I think the writers in Hollywood should wake up! I applaud these men, and thank God for their wisdom. God, keep on blessing them! Amen

Deborah Barnet at 6:35AM on Oct 25th 2007

8. It is not meant for hollywood to understand how a man of God does things. When God opens a door no hollywood can close it.Tyler knows how to walk right through.

wayne at 6:39AM on Oct 25th 2007

9. We are also a white family and own everything we've been able to LEGALLY get our hands on! It's not about anything, but God is in his life! His story of how he got his new house needs to be made into a movie! God's blessings to him are HUGE!

Lisa at 6:43AM on Oct 25th 2007

10. So everyone wants to know Tyler's big secret on how he does all this great business..there is only one true secret and it is God. He serves God, he is a man of God an by this ministry that God has given him, he has put it to helping others in which it is all paying off. God is really using the man. I love his movies and cant wait to see what he has in store next. God bless him and you all! :)

11. I'm sorry, but this is to Kevin. Thanks for the laugh, I needed that. I don't usually point out spelling errors, but your comment, "Take a long walk off a short peer," cracked me up. The visual is hilarious! The way you spelled peer is means a person of equal status. I think you meant pier. LOL Again, I'm not picking on you, Kevin, I misspell all the time. Just thought it was funny. Peace

12. Sister Nessa Bless you as well. Love you.

Roz Smith at 6:59AM on Oct 25th 2007

13. Tylers real secret is God and it's sad that the critics still haven't realized that. Yes when God opened that door for Tyler, whoa nellie ha ha ha. He visited my church earlier this year and didn't get left behind while we praised the Lord. Tyler jumped right in with his praise and admoration for the Lord.

Roz Smith at 7:01AM on Oct 25th 2007

14. I love this man. Our family desperately wants a "Madea" to keep us on track! I went to see "Getting Married" with friends and had a blast watching the movie with a large group of women that were shouting out responses to the movie. No one cared about the color differences, we were all just women having a great time.
TP is a gift to us all. I wish him the best life has to give...

Terry at 7:04AM on Oct 25th 2007

15. We are white and we love Tyler Perry's movies and skits. He is comical, clean and full of entertainment that doesn't involve all the craziness that others have to put into their movies to be entertaining.
