Are you feeling a little bit lost? Well, here is a very basic overview of some different styling regimens:) This is not meant to be exhaustive but just a basic starting point for the lost:) This focuses strictly on styling regimens.

    How to use this Guide

    1. Pick one regimen and try it out for a month
    2. Work with products you have and slowly pick up items you need
    3. Record each wash day/week in your journal, noting any positive or negatives reactions
    4. As you start tweaking your regimen, i.e. adding in oils or new products, record positives and negatives.
    5. Keep recording and experimenting until you find a regimen that works for you.

    Some Advice.....

Avoid buying a whole new set of products - Unless your current products are negatively affecting your hair, avoid buying a whole new set of products. Try buying one item from a line and seeing how they work for you or ask the company/retail location for samples.

Avoid jumping on bandwagons - There are lots of different methods for healthy hair but make sure to try one at a time and give it enough time to work. For instance, avoid jumping from rollersetting to condition washing to blowdrying/flatironing all in one month. Instead, if you want to try new things, try one for a month and record your progress. The next month, try another method and record. This will ensure you give each method a fair chance.

DON'T GET DISCOURAGED - Some of us have been abusing our hair for decades. So, it will take time to reverse that damage. Just select a regimen, give it a month to see if it works for your hair and if not, move on. Just be patient and your hair will reward you.

    Guide to Regimens
To help you find what regimen works best for you, I broke down the regimens into individual behavior patterns:)

    Regimen 1: Conditioner Washing
    - Using conditioner to wash the hair and letting it air dry

    Who this works great for:

          • Exercise Divas that need frequent cleansing
          • Ladies on the go who cant spend a ton of time on their hair
          • Ladies who need frequent hydration
          • Ladies whose hair is extremely damaged and want to avoid heat all together for a long period of time.

    Basic Regimen:

Wash the hair daily or every other day with a moisturizing conditioner
Apply leave-in, serum and moisturizer and air dry in buns, braids, twists, etc.

Regimen 2 : No Heat Styling Method - Washing the hair every 5-7 days, setting it on rollers/flexi rods/twists/braids,etc. and letting it airdry.

    Who this works great for:

        • Ladies who want to eliminate heat but wash more infrequently
        • Ladies who do not like conditioner washing but want to eliminate heat
        • Ladies who do not have or want to use an indirect heat source (hood dryer), but want to accomplish a certain style to their hair.

    Basic Regimen:
    Wash with a Moisturizing Shampoo
Deep condition for 20-30 mins with a Moisturizing Conditioner twice a month
Deep condition with a Light Protein Conditioner twice a month
Apply leave-in, serum and/or pomade and set hair on rollers, braids, twists, etc.
    Airdry and Style
Moisturize daily with moisturizer or natural pomade.

Regimen 3: Indirect Heat Styling - Washing 5-7 days, wet wrapping or setting on rollers/flexi-rods/twists, etc. and drying under a hood dryer.

    Who this is great for:

          • Ladies that want a "heat styled" look without the blow-dryer and flatiron
          • Ladies that don't want to deal with their hair for the rest of the week.
          • Ladies who have or want to purchase a hood dryer.

    Basic Regimen:

    Wash with a Moisturizing Shampoo
Deep condition with a Moisturizing Conditioner once a month
Deep condition with a Protein Conditioner twice a month
Apply leave-in and serum and set hair
Dry under a hood dryer for 1-2 hours
    Style
Moisturize daily with moisturizer or natural pomade.

    Regimen 4: Direct Heat Styling
    - Washing 5-7 days, blowdrying and flat ironing/curling hair.

    Who this is great for:

I really try to show alternatives to this method as using direct heat is not always the best option for textured hair. However, we understand that the options above are not always feasible so we at least want to show you ways to use heat in the least damaging.

        • Ladies who want super straight hair
        • Ladies who can't shake that blowdryer/flat iron just yet.

    Basic Regimen:

    Wash with Moisturizing Shampoo
Deep condition with a Light Protein Conditioner
Twice a month, deep condition with Nexxus Emergencee and follow with a Moisturizing Conditioner
Airdry until hair is ¾ dry and blow dry on Medium
    Flat-iron on med/low
Moisturize daily with moisturizer or natural pomade.

Hope this helps!!! For more tips and techniques, join me at Healthy Textures!

Do you have hard water in your area? Does your hair fill dull and coated after washing?

You might want to try a chelating shampoo. Chelate means "claw" in latin. If we look closely at the chemical structure of chelators, we would see that they have these tiny claw-like branches. These branches grab and attach themselves to calcium and magnesium ions found in water. An abundance of these ions results in "hard water" and cause soap film (which is what we find all over our shower walls and bath tubs).

This film also prevents shampoos from lathering and leaves the hair dull, hard and coated. A chelating shampoo will prevent the film from depositing on the hair shaft and restore shine and luster to the hair. Some find them to be a bit stripping so it's best to use them once or twice a month.

    Some Great Chelating Shampoos:

    Joico K-Pak Chelating Shampoo - $9.99
Lanza Swim and Sun Daily Chelating Shampoo - $18.99
    Kenra Chelating Shampoo - $8.99

All of these products can be found online or at your local Beauty Supply Store. Happy growing:) For more tips and articles, join me at www.healthytextures.com.

    Wassup Hair Lovers!!

As it heats up slowly here in NYC, sistas are unleashing their inner diva via great personal style and even greater--- fun hairdos!

So while taking in the sun and the scene, I took notice of the many ways that sistas were rocking their natural hair.

Outside of her beautifully cropped free curl fro, this young woman's leopard jumpsuit also caught my eye; in between shots I learned that she was an emerging designer who was seeking inspiration among the crowd.

Speaking of "crowd inspiration." Let me just take a moment to dish about the yumminess of Union Square.

FYI: The yummy factor has to be high in order for me to find great subjects to shoot.

For those of you not living in New York City, let me tell you that Union Square is the cool, hip, young, bohemian non-flashy though just as crowded version of Times Square, minus the tourist. Many of the divas that I spotted were hanging out on the "yard" right near the park surrounded by an organic farmers market, a Diesel store and a variety of artists, designers and musicians selling their wares. A lovely epic center, folks..defo get yourself down to the Square the next time you are in NYC.

    Back to the hair.

As we all know our hair textures, curl patterns and lengths will vary according to ethnic make-up, genetics, product usage and personal mainatance.

This bride-to-be's naturally, soft abundant curls are proof of the variety of natural textures we share; I'm also diggin' her t-shirt, aren't you?

Sevy, another fabulous emerging designer and a good friend who I wasn't expecting to see, but wasn't surprised to find, was also chillin' in the Square. Her fro features trimmed sides with a higher top; take style note of the mod shades, the layered scarves and the divalicious swagger!

The last natural diva I caught up with, was hanging out with dudes with equally fun hair (but that's another blog post). When I asked her how she maintained her natural hair, she mentioned that she blew it straight-to-wavy on a daily basis alongside using a leave-in conditioner. I love the fullness and the length of her hair alongside the brightness of her cardigan and retro shades.

    Until next time...keep it shiny!!!!

    Wassup, hair lovers!

As we shake things up over here at Hair Apparent, we intend to bring you the most innovative, relevant and fun hair blog on the web with industry interviews, stylish hair girls on the streets, celebrity trends, salon reviews and more!

This week I catch up with celebrity hairstylist Dana Gibbs of Danasloft.com.

Her fingers have not only created some of the most rocking celebrity hairstyles, but she double dips as a product innovator and salon owner.

With celebrities like Rihanna and Lauryn Hill under your flatiron, a thriving hair studio and a growing niche beauty line, tell us what a day in your life is like?

Well, I am an early bird, so I get up about 5:30a most days and read my daily prayer to get my day started. Then I make my coffee (a must have) and answer emails. Right now I am working on the press kits for the products, so most mornings I am going over everything that my publicist and graphic artist has sent me for my approval. I'm putting together local newspaper ads and also re-doing my website for the new salon and the launch of the hair products. I get to the salon about 10a.m. and do hair until about 8pm. Unfortunately with this schedule, I've put off the freelancing for a while, in order to focus on getting the salon and products off the ground.

What inspired the creation of your beauty collection and what are the yummy products available?

Being a hairstylist, it just made sense to make my own line of hair care products, which will be officially launched next month. This line is called Make Time for Me and consists of: Restore Me moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, Refresh Me tea tree shampoo and conditioner, Tex Me pomade, Save Me hair spray, Smooth Me leave in conditioner and Gloss Me laminate. These products are amazing (if I do say so myself) and are prefect for all hair types, from super curly to straight hair. At this time they are available for sale at my salon, but will soon be available on my website and hopefully in stores by this summer.

Let's chat celebrities.......How were you able to break into their world and literally get them in your hands?

It took several years to break into this freelancing business. I had to first build a strong portfolio which meant me doing a lot of test shoots (photo shoots you do free of charge for pictures) just to get enough images to take to an agent to rep me. I also had a few very good friends in the business that put me down on jobs to help me get started. I would do anything to be on a job, if someone wanted me to assist; I was there, just to be able to learn all that I could; and trust me no money was being made at those times. Once I had a good portfolio and an agent, it became a little easier, but you always have to hustle just to keep things fresh. Most of the time you get chosen by your work, then it is up to you and your personality to get called back.

Who among the "Red Carpet Famous" always gets it right in terms of their hair? What makes it "right" from your point of view? Who gets it "wrong"?

I love what Rihanna is doing. Her style right now reminds me of my own personal style. She has set whole new trends across the board and I love that! I also love Tracy Ellis Ross' look because she has kept her hair natural and showed us how to make it super stylish. There are some who seem to always be wrong (I won't name names) because they just seem to try too hard. I feel like there are a few out there who look the same and are afraid to buck the system in fear of not being accepted anymore, so a lot of folks are looking very similar. That's why I love Kelis, she always has her own style, but she doesn't always get the credit for starting new trends. She stays ahead of the curve, and that is truly fabulous!

In terms of styling, what are your specialties?

Right now I am doing weaves and extensions all day long. Most of my clients are growing their relaxers out and going natural, so we are doing weaves to get them through the transition. I love the fact that 1/3 of my clients are going natural; their hair looks thick and healthy and they can wear their hair natural or press it straight. I am also known for my hair coloring and love, love, love doing it. I specialize in doing great colors that are healthy and not destroying to the integrity of the hair.

What is the one hair trend that you think pretty much any female can wear? And are there any trends that you are totally not feeling?

I would say that there is a Bob out there for everyone. Be it layered, one length, straight bangs, swooped bang, or asymmetrical, just about everyone can wear this style. And since this is a classic look, it will always be timeless. As far as the no no's, please stay away from orange hair and I'm not talking a pretty copper, I'm talking clown orange! That is the worst! If you want a great color, let a hair color professional do the job for you. Don't go messing in your best friend's kitchen.

Breakdown for us your look right now.

I just colored my hair honey blond with platinum highlights, for the summer, with a few tracks up front for a funky asymmetrical look. Although I have been know to change my hair every other week, LOL, I always seem to go back to this look. They say it's the one that fits me best.

Seeking a pretty, yet fuss-free makeup look this spring? This season peaches, corals, and light washes of orange -- as seen at Carlos Miele's spring 2008 collection -- complement all skin tones and are the perfect shades that work for day, night, weddings and more.

Working with one color is a fool-proof way to achieve a pulled-together look as it eliminates the need for blending two or three different shades. Yet pulling it off is not as easy as it looks. "That's because it only works best with some shades," explains makeup artist Lanier Long, who has painted the faces of celebrities ranging from Lauryn Hill to Brandy to India.Arie. Long recommends sticking with more earthy tones. Purple palettes, for example, need not apply. But even with the most skintone-illuminating shades the result can look clumsy, instead of chic. The trick, says Long, is playing with different textures -- think creamy eyeshadow with a lipstain. Or matte eyeshadow with a lipstick or gloss. The result? A palette so simple it sizzles.

The red carpet was more of a runway this week for celebs who served style for the masses. From Los Angeles to London to France, severals stunners including Janet Jackson, Eva Longoria, Kelly Rowland, Eve and Joy Bryant showed up in (dare we say it?) 'copy me' or 'don't copy' me looks. Attention-grabbing in their bold-bright hues, animal prints and limited-edition numbers, it was certainly the sistas that were the highlight of the week. There was quite a stir in <place w:st="on"> <city w:st="on">Los Angeles Tuesday night when British fashion designer Alexander McQueen opened his first store there. The opening, which was highly anticipated by <city w:st="on"> <place w:st="on"> Hollywood starlets who covet his super high-end-never imitated-designs, was attended by West Coast residents Janet Jackson, Eve, Joy Bryant and Sex and The City hunk Jason Lewis, to name a few. It was acknowledged that the crowd gasped when Janet arrived in her custom McQueen kimono.

Did it leave you breathless? Would you love or leave this look?

<city w:st="on"> <place w:st="on"> At the McQueen event Eve impressed with her limited-edition British flag clutch. Only 17 were made for a hefty price tag of $2,000. The dress? Not so impressive.

Kelly Rowland was lucky enough to score tix to the Sex And The City premier in London on Monday. I adore her purple frock on her bronzeskin.

Every now and again, OK maybe a little too much, this Style Spotter enjoys after work drinks and light dinner with friends. However, for those of you new to the city it can be a hassle to find a chic place to unwind after such a hectic metropolitan day. You need a restaurant/bar where reservations are unnecessary, where cocktails are dangerously pretty and where the appetizers are what they should be... appetizing!

Well, my fabulous sister-in-law and I walked down trendy 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn to spot after work hot spots for those in need of a proper dose of spring time fun!

Nana located on 155 5th Avenue is a modern mix of Asian Fusion. There's a delectable sushi bar and drinks range from sake to raspberry, white chocolate martini's. So, very good.(hiccup!)

For those of you who desire a Mediterranean influenced evening, join the hip set of patrons who relax, (did we mention the hookahs?) and dine here at Babouche. Located at 163 5th Avenue, Babouche is truly an oasis in the heart of Park Slope with a menu featuring modern Moroccan dishes and palpable wines.

    .

Some days you simply want a decent steak, a slop of mashed potatoes and a cold beer. 200 Fifth offers just that and more with live music nights, ball games on the numerous flat screens, a pool table, along with an eclectic juke box, all make for a very fun, ole American night. Cleverly named after it's location on 200 5th Avenue, 200 Fifth also satisfies you tipsy, sweet tooth with a mix of alcoholic, filled dessert shakes.

Press 195, named by the Food Network as the "Sandwich Kings of Brooklyn," certainly live up to their names. Located at 195 5th Avenue, Press 195 specializes in mouth watering hot pressed sandwiches, which are pressed using handcrafted Ciabatta bread, and rare New England beer. Some days you just want to be easy.

    KANYE WEST'S OWN SUNGLASSES BRAND

(Kanye in a pair of Ksubi sunnies)

Hip-hop lovin' fashionistos have eagerly been anticipating the arrival of rapper Kanye West's Pastelle clothing line.

The trendsetter, who inspired a legion of fans including Jay-Z to rock an Arabic scarf a' la Jesse James style, will begin with the release of Pastelle sunglasses as part of his collabo with Australian brand Ksubi. West has been a fan of the company himself having rocked their shades to shows for quite some time. "I love the sunnies Ksubi has produced over the years. It is an honor to collaborate with them."

    "Sunnies"?

Co-created by head designer George Gorrow, the pair will drop limited-edition gold frames for $2,000 in October. What a price tag! Clearly he's not thinking about his core audience. Somebody's spending a little too much time in Japan lately...

    BLACK GIRLS WILL RULE VOGUE

Major fashion mag VOGUE ITALIA is currently shooting an issue featuring all Black girls. That's right, all Black. Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzano told VOGUE UK, "Nobody is using Black girls. I see so many beautiful girls and they were complaining that they are not used enough". Entirely photographed by Steven Meisel, the July 2008 issue will also feature Iman, Liya Kebede and Chanel Iman, to name a few. They'll continue to feature other under represented ethnic groups in upcoming issues. Hopefully other print pubs will follow suit stateside.

The cover star? Not the blackberry weapon-wielding Naomi Campbell but newcomer Jourdan Dunn. The 17 year-old fellow London native who was discovered there in 2006 has been the talk of the industry ever since she walked an impressive 75 shows this past spring even for Prada who hasn't used a Black model, (Naomi) since 1997! Will Jourdan Dunn be heir to Naomi's throne?

VIVICA SEARCHES FOR NEXT TOP STYLIST

Actress/producer Vivica A. Fox is set to host a new reality show for VH1 which will debut on the network this summer. "Glam God with Vivica A. Fox" is a style search with contestants competing to win in three major categories-hair, makeup and wardrobe. Slated to begin taping next month, the eight-episode series ends with the ultimate stylist winning $10,000 and a chance to style an A-list celebrity. Fashion cues from Vivica? I'm not too sure.
