Brooklyn Fashion Week{end} was held this past weekend in East Williamsburg, BK. The borough bubbled with fashion minds and muses who attended Friday night's premiere. Style Spotter attended as well, with high heels and high hopes of viewing a chic, cutting edge show, since most of last year's Brooklyn runway shows were truly outstanding. Some designers delivered while others... well as they say: If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
Natasha Samoylenko, of Samoy Lenko, whose See-line Woman collection took inspiration from Nina Simone's sensual and strong song, "Sealion Woman," and the simple strength of Peacocky who created a line of graphic tees for the creative man were my two favorite designers.

With the political and economic upheavals of the past few days, more people are looking for change, even the fashionistas. This voting season, designers are showing us that fashion is not at all superficial.
So, put the political bumper stickers in the car trunk and place the slogan buttons in your junk draw, because politically minded designers have created chic Obama gear for democratic fashionistas who support change, but must also support their high end style.
Runway to Change is a union of more than 25 designers who have created special pieces of clothing or accessories featuring Obama's campaign logo or message. From T-shirts to tote bags, the limited-edition designer items are available on the candidate's website: http://store.barackobama.com/Runway_To_Change_s/1034.htm

RUNWAY: Chanel Iman wearing "the bowl cut" at Yves Saint Laurent
When making our transition from summer to fall we shouldn't be limited to just wardrobe and and dietary changes (seasonal colonics anyone?) We should also make a few changes in the beauty department as well. When Stylespotter attended the Fall collections this past February, we took note of the beauty direction from the various designers when not gagging on the hottest furs, boots and coats to consider investing in. We also noticed that some of it was deadringers for what some of our favorite celebs have been doing for quite some time if not recently. When Yves Saint Laurent sent out an army of models in 60's Beatles-esque bowl cut wigs, I immediately thought of superproducer Timbaland ingénue Kheri Hilson when she blew us away with her version in their "Way We Are" music video last year. Teen girls have been copying Rihanna's bright makeup before John Galliano featured it at Christian Dior. And the bright nails at his namesake collection? Chicago rapper Kid Sister spewed she 'got her toes done with her fingernails matchin' inher first single "Pro Nails" this past spring. Here, we show some of our favorite beauty trends of the season straight from the runway and celebs who do it their way... which is the real way to do it course.

REALWAY: R&B newcomer Keri Hilson rocks the "bowl" cut the real way

RUNWAY: Chanel Iman is "pretty in pink" at Anna Sui

REALWAY: Pink works on many skintones including pop star Rihanna's

RUNWAY: Liya Kebede wearing "smokey eyes" at Oscar De La Renta

REALWAY: J-Hud wears the smokey eye with silver accents

RUNWAY: Jourdan Dun wears beautiful neutrals at Valentino

REALWAY: Vanessa Williams wearing neutral makeup at the 2008 Emmys

RUNWAY: Striped bold colored nails at John Galliano

REALWAY: Hip-hopper Kid Sister sporting bright nails

RUNWAY: Black nails at Baby Phat

REALWAY: Jordin Sparks' dark nails at MTV's 2008 VMAs

Today's fashion forward girls can pierce, pin or glue jewelry to any body part for a trendy and /or slightly painful fashion make over. Style Spotter has spotted two new trends of body jewelry; one, which is loved and adored, the other disliked as much as Crocs.
THE LOVE - Hair jewelry or hair accessories are making a major comeback. No longer just for special events, these unique hair pins require a second glance and add a chic element to an entire look.

Rihanna adorns a fabulous piece of hair jewelry.

Bejeweled head bands at Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2009 add glitz to an otherwise simple uniform.
Style Spotter picks:

TSK, TSK, TSK - The concept of jewelry is suppose to be bright, pretty and pleasing to the eye... not on the eye! Artist designer Eric Klarenbeek has created "eye jewelry" for the daring. As an avid contact wearer, Style Spotter finds this look to be frightening and somewhat disturbing. BV Readers what do you think? Would you try a pair?

Celebs crossed the Atlantic recently to partake in festivities during both London and Milan Fashion Week where designers presented their Spring/Summer 2009 collections.
In London Outkast's Andre 3000 launched his Benjamin Bixby line at fame ddepartment store Harrod's and Naomi Campbell did the rare deed of walking for British designer Issa. Campbell has become more selective about who she'll work with so it was a grand gesture indeed. Later in the week she held her annual fundraiser, Fashion for Relief which this year benefits the White Ribbon Alliance, a charity dedicated to maternal mortality. (Campbell's first was held in New York in 2005 benefitting victims of Hurricane Katrina.) Mostly British celebrities participated wearing designs auctioned live at the event including designer Vivienne Westwood, British singer Estelle and male supermodel Tyson Beckford (shirtless no less, so the ladies swooned). Campbell raised hundreds of thousands. An impressive feat for someone who held quite the reputation of caring less about others. But we won't go there.
This week R&B starlets jetted to Italy in droves to support their favorite Italian designer friends. Last night Jennifer Lopez posed pretty in white for paparazzi at Dolce & Gabbana. Of course hubby Marc Anthony was there. Rihanna was at Gucci, Kelly Rowland at Just Cavalli and D&G (as did Ne-Yo) and Solange Knowles at Giorgio Armani's Emporio and namesake collection shows.

By Angela Bronner, BlackVoices.com
Kim Osorio made history as the first female editor of 'The Source' magazine. During her tenure at the top of the "Hip Hop Bible," there were sales records broken and new territory charted. Apparently, there was also a crazy, dysfunctional underside to the glitz and glamour.
In her new memoir, 'Straight From the Source: An Expose From the Former Editor-in-Chief of the Hip-Hop Bible,' (Simon and Shuster), Osorio recounts a work environment where women were belittled, cursed out, and harassed, as well as a blow-by-blow description of how the magazine took a nose dive into bankruptcy, primarily due to an ill-fated "beef" with rap superstar Eminem.
While recounting the story of how a girl raised in the Bronx went on to get a law degree and rose to the helm of the most prestigious rap magazine, Osorio also speaks candidly about her love affairs with rappers Nas and 50 Cent (the latter responded to the book in a very graphic, derogatory way). She also describes how she struggled with the extreme highs and lows of her work environment, weighing a fly, well-paying job against the very different standards to which women and men seem to be held.
The media's coverage of 'Straight From the Source' has been somewhat limited. What do you think this is about? Is it that other books of the same genre (Faith, Pepa) were released during the same time, or is it some kind of leverage that Dave and Benzino, that 50 may have in the media?
I think the media is consumed with celebrity, so they will immediately focus any and all attention on the celebrity aspect of the book. And there is some of that, yes, but there is a story here that readers who read books will take a liking to. When I go to a book store, I look for stories that are interesting, that I can relate to, and that are going to make me feel empowered when I finish reading them, and that's what this book is.
Has your view of hip-hop changed since being in the middle of something so difficult and being close to its (rotting) core?My view of the business that we call hip-hop has changed, but my view of the culture is still the same. I still love hip-hop and the opportunities that it has given to people like me. I love the music that I grew up on, and I love the culture that made me want to work in the business, but I do not love this business and what it turns people into.
Why is your book different than a Superhead? (which I'm sure people will call you)
'Straight From The Source' is a story about a girl who grew up loving hip-hop, learned how to write about it, and ultimately reached a position that no other female ever did. But, guess what? In most of the stories I read, the girl ends up in bed with someone and so did I. If there wasn't any of that, it would be unrealistic. Only in this story, that ends up backfiring because I'm a woman. That's why the double standard is the main theme in this book.
Would you have done anything differently if you had to do it all over again? Or just some things?
We can always look back on things and think "what if." But ultimately, everything happens for a reason.
Did you get your money in the lawsuit against 'The Source?'

Jill Scott's latest album 'The Real Thing' is coming to a television screen near you. And it's going to be a sight for your eyes and a pleasure to your ears. Titled 'Jill Scott: The Real Thing Tour (Live in Philly),' the one-hour special features the two-time Grammy Award winning wunderkind performing a mix of her classic hits such as 'A Long Walk' and 'The Way,' juxtaposed with material from her newer projects, including the inspirational anthem 'Golden' and the tell-it-like-it-is, take-no-prisoners 'Hate On Me.' Despite going through legal woes over the past few years, neo-soul originator D'Angelo is back in the studio working on a new album. According to 'Billboard,' the singer is expected to release his new as-yet-untitled album next year on J Records. The company bought out his contract in 2005 from Virgin Records (who released his first two albums). Fans can expect the man legally known as Michael D'Angelo Archer to hook up with Raphael Saadiq once again, the two previously worked together on Saadiq's 2002 hit 'Be Here.' Although the album is still in its early stages, the 'Brown Sugar' crooner has plans to also land John Mayer on the opus, with a single to hit the airwaves by the end of the year. Until that time comes, fans can catch some of D'Angelo in his former glory with the recently released compilation, 'The Best So Far,' featuring hits, rarities and previously unreleased videos.

The hip-hop hit-maker has been in the studio crafting hits for Jay-Z, G-Unit, Ludacris, T.I. , Alicia Keys, and surprisingly the icon himself Michael Jackson. The Bronx native (legally known as Kasseem Dean) recently revealed his plans to not only produce some music for the King of Pop, but produce his tour as well. "I'm probably gonna be producing his tour and everything," he explained to 'MTV.' "I'm designing planes for Gulf Stream and everything. They called me. I'm around different people. I'm around billionaires. I'm around people like that." This October Swizz Beatz plans to release his new studio opus entitled, 'Life After the Party.'

Trying to maintain a successful career in the music industry as well as Hollywood can be a bit strenuous for some rappers. But not Ludacris! Luda (as he is also known as) not only has his new album, 'Theater of the Mind' slated to hit stores in September, he's also in the process of filming a few movies. On Halloween, the actor/rapper will be appearing in Guy Ritchie's new film 'RocknRolla.' He also recently finished shooting 'Max Payne,' a crime thriller fronted by Mark Wahlberg. When asked which profession he likes most, he simply replied: "Music is still my number-one love. I just balance a lot of different things now." Hollywood is still calling him, though. To date, Ludacris has starred in the Academy Award winning movie 'Crash,' the John Singleton-produced 'Hustle & Flow' and 'Fred Clause,' alongside Vince Vaughan.

6/26/08: Lauryn Hill/Kanye West
'Entertainment Weekly' magazine recently unveiled its 'New Classics' list in which they ranked the best in music, movies, TV shows, and books from over the past 25 years. Lauryn Hill's mega-selling solo debut 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' landed at number two slot behind Prince's timeless classic 'Purple Rain,' which held down the top spot. Other artist that made the list included Kanye West (No. 4), Jay-Z (No. 7), Outkast (No. 12), Beyonce (No. 19), Mariah Carey (No. 21), Nas (No. 28), and The Notorious B.I.G (No. 40), among many others.

There's really nothing to respond to. I didn't ask either of them any questions, nor did I say anything that wasn't true. 50 called me last week. He's a businessman, so he asked how the press was going. When I brought it up, he said he never said that, so I sent him a book.
What advice would you give women who are going through something similar (sexual harassment) in the workplace? Is it best to sometimes just get another job and not speak up?
I think different women deal with situations differently. I would never advise a woman to do something that she was not comfortable with, and I even know women today who would rather not deal with all the drama that comes with filing a complaint so they'd rather just move on instead of saying anything. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'm just cut from a different cloth.
Biggest lesson learned from this experience?
The biggest lesson I've learned is that anything you say and do can and will be used against you. It's just like being read your Miranda rights.

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and a half and we're having some problems. First his problem with me is that I tend to argue with him when he comes to me with a problem instead of hearing him out. Second, I feel that he doesn't appreciate the good things that I do for him and his kids. We recently had a big argument about the two and were separated for a short time. We were thinking about starting over like when we first met...What do you suggest we do? The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!
Every relationship will incur its ups and downs, and how you choose to handle those highs and lows will define weather you and your relationship can grow in a healthy direction. Starting over as if you are both meeting for the first time will not solve your current issue, because the work that needs to be done to address the issue has not been resolved. Instead of starting the relationship over, you should start the discussion over again. This time, though, think carefully about the best way for you to deal with an issue when he brings a problem to you. I want you to work on listening to what your partner has to say and repeating back to him exactly what he said. Let him know that you hear what he is saying. After you have listened and truly taken in his problem, I want you to take 24 hours to process it. That means you can not answer him or discuss it with him for one day. As for feeling unappreciated, let your partner know that you need him to tell you just how great you are as a stepmother and partner. Communicating your needs is necessary in every relationship, and the more you do it, the happier and more fulfilled you will be.

I have a serious problem. I am very much in love with my husband and because I wanted to be the best wife I could be I agreed to petitioning for his two sons that are 9 years of age to come and live with us. It's only been a few months, and I don't like this situation. I really feel like there is no way I can bear this for more than a year including the few months they have already been here. I have a four year old daughter with my husband and I have a baby boy on the way, due in January. I hate this situation with a passion. My husband was never really with them and I feel like he acts as if he owes them and is trying to make up for lost time. He acts like he doesn't care if they live here with us for years. I am only 27 and I feel uncomfortable, I don't feel like my home is home any more. I regret agreeing to this and I feel as if I have harmed myself and our marriage by doing this. I really want them out, because this isn't going to work. I have no outside children. Please tell me what should I say or do? If they aren't gone by a certain time I'll probably move out of our home, which isn't mine any more anyway.
When we choose to bring children into the world, they are our responsibility. Just as you would not abandon your own children, your husband, whom you probably married because he is a great man who accepts his responsibilities, cannot abandon his two sons. I understand that the dynamic has changed in your household and it is not easy raising three children with a fourth on the way. It sounds as if you are totally overwhelmed, and it's time to get some help. Before you decide to run for the hills, sit your husband down and let him know that you need help raising these children. First, he needs to set some boundaries for his boys, and let them know that you are their stepmother and they have to listen to and do what you say. Think about exactly what is bothering you with having his two boys in your house and let your husband know so that you two can figure out the best way to resolve it. This is a time of transition for you and your family, and it is going to take both parents working as a team to make this transition as successful as possible.

I was dating a younger man, and he was very nice at the time, like most men are when things are good. Long story short, I ended up getting pregnant with a child he didn't want. It was truly a nightmare from the moment I said "I am having a baby." What a change this turned out to be. I spent most of my life wanting a baby, but I didn't think it would come this way or with this man. They always said "Don't play unless you plan to stay!" We had a huge falling out over this pregnancy and he never got to see his son until recently. I have let him back in my life and now I feel he is playing with my feelings just to find out about his son, whom he didn't want. I feel in my heart he is seeing someone else, but I need help in proving this point to myself, because there is still love in my heart for him. I truly do love him, but the trust isn't there. What can I do?
Trust takes time to rebuild in any relationship, and you are now not only responsible for your own well-being, but the safety and security of your son. If your ex wants to be a part of your son's life, you need to first set some ground rules. The role of father is not a part-time position that he can walk away from at any time. If he chooses to be in your son's life, then let him know that he must make a commitment to be in it for the rest of his life. Let him know that you support his role as father if that is the one he chooses to play, but that once he accepts that role there is no turning around and changing his mind. You must protect your son and make the best decisions for him. As for your relationship with your ex, you do not know what his real intentions are with you, therefore you need to step back and carefully watch his actions. Does what he says coincide with what he does? Is he walking the talk? Does he put you and your son's happiness and needs above his own? Listen with your ears and your eyes and trust your judgement. You also want to question if this is the man who can truly fulfill your needs, wants, desires and requirements or is it just the nagging feeling of neediness that is rekindling this desire for him.

I am 19 and I just found out I am pregnant. I am a sophomore in college, and I don't feel that I am ready to be a parent. My parents don't know, and I don't want to tell them. They don't believe in abortion. My boyfriend doesn't want to have a kid either, and we both feel like we have our whole lives ahead of us. What should I do?
You are legally an adult, so the choice is in your hands as to what you can do. There are several choices you can make but each one begins by telling your family the truth and having an open discussion about the options that are available to you. Let them know that in the end, you will be the one to make the choice that is best for you. You should reach out to a counselor at school or at Planned Parenthood. They can help you go over your choices and what each choice will mean for your future. Three choices that are available to you are to have the baby and raise it yourself; have the baby and put it up for adoption; or to have an abortion. Take the time to go over each choice and imagine what your life and future will be like if you go down that road. This is a very important decision and you want to know all your options before making the choice that will be best for you.

By Tim'm T. West, Special to BlackVoices.com
I am one of the lucky ones: lucky, brave or both. This July, I celebrated my 36th birthday in the company of family, friends, and my partner Dave. The term "partner" doesn't rest well in the ears of some black families, but I am lucky. My family loves me for who I am, no matter what.
A few years ago my small, tight-knit family, consisting of two sisters and four brothers, as well as extended family, started a reunion for the generations to come. This year, being only the second time we've met, I created an online listserve, "The Blessed Wests", to shorten the distance of time and space when we are not together.
This year, I took the initiative to set the tone for the "The Blessed Wests". A gay man, I realize that getting my family to honor my partnership with Dave, a man I have known since 2004, but have only been partnered with since early 2008, might take some time. At 31, Dave is pretty new to the whole "coming out" process. Encouraged by the security of my love, and my desire to no longer love "in hiding", I'm grateful that he trusts my guidance as we aspire to build a family: a commitment ceremony, a home, and adoption are aspirations we both share.
My family is a Christian family full of preacher-men and good church women. I respect their beliefs as they respect my decision to live my life as an out gay man.
Timm West GalleryI love my nephew DJ and niece Jasmine, like my own. They love their Uncles Tim'm and Dave as effortlessly as they loved Uncle Tim'm before Dave.
My brothers Joseph, Matthew, and David represent 3 of 4 brothers who love and support me and value family.
My partner Dave and I enjoy a moment with my young cousins Christopher (left) and Justin (right). Their mother, Cynthia, and I are more like siblings than cousins.
My cousin Cynthia, my sister Talisha, Dave, and my sister Toya pose for a shot. Their smiles say a thousand words.
Dave and I pose for a shot on the 4th of July, just days before my 36th birthday and family reunion.
I'm not certain about certain people's mother's love, but my mother, Irma Pearl Stinson, is priceless for here unconditional love and acceptance my partner, Dave.
As my mother's Family Reunion shirt suggests, "A Family that Prays Together, Stays Together".
I remain hopeful that my "family" will continue to honor the vast ways in which black families are constructed: second marriages, adopted children, long-standing friendships, and yes same-sex partnerships.
After graduating at the top of my class with scholarships to some of our nation's premier colleges, and having been a very popular student leader and athlete, coming out to my mother during my freshman year of college filled in some of the missing pieces. The burden of silence I carried as a teen, the depression, the fasting and praying for "change," and the suicide attempts for "change" proved masochistic at best.
On Sunday we made the drive from Shreveport to the outskirts of Taylor, Arkansas; a small township without a traffic light between paper mills, oil wells, and chicken plants. It is believed that Bible belt Christians, in places where the fields grow high and the roads "go dirt", are the most homophobic. I have a different experience. We arrived to the Church and received hugs from my niece and nephew. My brother-in-law, one among a few ministers in my family warmly greeted both me and Dave. There was such comfort in Dave meeting the family.
After a marathon sermon of the preacher men of my family about what it means to build a "strong house" (Mark 3:25), we gathered at the same modest three-bedroom wooden house in which we were raised. If it was crowded as children, you can imagine how quickly it filled. Midnight Starr soul train lines, "seconds" of fried chicken and potato salad, and a game of Family Feud were highlights of the day. As my family harmonized on "Happy Birthday," to help me ring in my 36th year, I made a wish that the love Dave and I were experiencing would grow-wished that my young nieces, nephews, and cousins would be part of a family tradition in which they always knew that they are welcomed home.
My mother is the rock of my family. In her quiet resolve she understands what it means for love to conquer all. We have a relationship rooted in her prayerfulness and love. My father, divorced from my mother and unable to attend the reunion, taught me toughness. While he deliberately sought to raise strong, virile, heterosexual sons, we joke that he raised, among them, one strong, virile gay man. He's proud that he raised a strong man-- one strong enough to confront the truth of my sexuality and live with its consequences, among them a shamed and confused past that led to HIV infection in 1999. My father, the same man who called us "sissies" when we missed tackles or failed to get a rebound, suggests that he would like to perform my commitment ceremony, when that time comes. My brothers, sisters, and cousins will be there. They understood that I wouldn't be me if hiding my sexuality.
Our recent gathering embodies the sum total of all our trials and triumphs. I am healthy, nearly 10 years after HIV almost claimed my life. We smile, fuss, cook, and dance like most families at reunions. We presented a powerful example of what it means to love beyond the fear of what others think. At 36, I'm as happy as I have ever been. Twenty years after I sat on the same front porch where we recently celebrated, contemplating an end to my life, I can say with full resolve and with all parts of me present: It feels good to come home!

I have just been proposed to by a wonderful man -- he is Jewish and I am not. We are planning a spring wedding, and I wanted to know how we can incorporate his traditions as well as my own into our wedding ceremony.
The melding of traditions within a wedding ceremony is a beautiful idea, and if you choose to do so, you want to make sure that you choose the traditions that apply to, and are most important to your fiance and his family. Find out if they are Ashkenazi (Eastern European or Germanic descent) or Sephardi Jews (descendent from the Iberian Peninsula), or if they are strict orthodox. Your choice of traditions will depend upon their Jewish heritage, so do the research to learn about the traditions that apply to his family. First ask your fiancé what type of wedding he would like to have, and if he agrees with your idea of melding traditions. Involve his mother in the planning process. This is a great opportunity to connect with his family, and it shows them that you respect and honor their faith and traditions.

My boyfriend was my associate for at least 10 years. We've been dating for 2 years now, and I just found out that he has a 6 year old daughter. He is always crying broke even though he works. He is handsome, really good in bed, and is a nice guy over all, but I can't help but think he is hiding something. He will not bring me around his family and I just learned that he has a sister and two brothers. He just told me that he is going to his oldest brothers house for Labor Day and I'm not allowed to come. I don't understand any of this. He is 41 and he asked me to marry him but he did not give me a ring or anything else. He is always nice to me, but hates to spend money on me and he is hiding me from his family and his friends. I told him last night that it was over because I just could not take the games anymore. Do you think I did the right thing?
The question you should ask yourself is not "Did I do the right thing in choosing to end this relationship" but rather "Did I do the right thing in choosing to honor and respect myself." You were experiencing a closed relationship, where one partner lacked the ability to open up and share their self and their life with the other. This does not allow for growth or connection with one another, and leads to an unstable relationship because you always feel like he is hiding something from you. You made a very healthy and conscious choice to leave this relationship behind and move forward with your life. Take the time now to heal and create a vision of the type of healthy relationship you want to have with someone who will love and honor you. Marriage is about sharing your life with a partner, so choose a person who has similar relationship values and beliefs. Together you can truly share your lives with each other.

There are a few product lines that are household names; Keracare, Nexxus, Mizani, etc. But there are also product lines that seem to be flying under the radar. With the help of the members on my site, I compiled this list of lesser known but still fantastic products.1. Nairobi
This line has a very comprehensive set of products, from shampoos to moisturizers. Their setting lotion is famous for creating silky roller sets without the typical hard, crunchy feel.
2. Silk Elements
Many overlook this product line because it is inexpensive. However, nothing creates shiny, sexy hair like Silk Elements.
3. Design Essentials
Another great line of products that many people are not familiar with. They have a variety of home maintenance products and seem committed to educating consumers about healthy hair care.
4. Hairveda
A line products developed for highly textured hair. They use Indian herbs and recipes to create products that are gentle and effective on natural and chemically processed hair.
5. Dominican Products
A lot of Dominican products are inexpensive and chock full of natural ingredients. Check out this site for a variety of Dominican products and recommendations.

For a lot of mothers and fathers, washing and styling their kid's hair can be quite an ordeal. Detangling alone can be tedious and time-consuming. Here are a few tips to help reduce the amount of tangles in your child's hair.1) Apply oil or conditioner to the hair before washing. This will help keep their hair soft and manageable during the washing cycle. Apply to dry hair and comb the hair to distribute the oil and work out any pre-existing knots or tangles.
2) Next, divide the hair into four sections. Wash and rinse one individual section at a time.
3) Focus on washing the roots, not the hair and massaging the product into the scalp in circular motions. Squeeze the product down the length of the hair.4). Rinse and immediately apply a creme rinse or detangler and twist back up. Move on to the next section. Continue on until all sections are washed and conditioned. Let the conditioner penetrate for a few minutes.
5). Unravel a section and rinse. Spritz with a leave-in and apply a light natural oil or moisturizer. Natural oils and pomades like shea butter or avocado oil work very well on kid's hair. Grab the hair by the roots and start detangling from the ends to the roots. Continue on, rinsing and detangling section by section. Then, braid, twist, roller set, Bantu knot, air dry or style as usual.
The point is to wash, condition and style the hair in sections so the hair does not become one big tangled mess. By keeping large sections separate, you are better able to retain control of the hair. Also, it allows the products you use to penetrate the hair and make it easier to style. It may seem like extra work, but once you get the hang of it, working in sections can really reduce the time and energy spent detangling your child's hair.

1) In transit? Wear your hair up!As the weather gets cooler, the ends of your hair will start coming into contact with harsh fabrics, like wool and polyester, from your coat or hat. Protect your ends from unnecessary friction by pulling the hair back and tucking the ends into a bun or cute updo.
2) Avoid curling or flat ironing in the morning
I know its very easy to plug in the flat iron or curling iron each morning but the extra heat and stress on your hair could lead to unnecessary split ends overtime.
The morning heat routine can be avoided by spending a few extra minutes on your hair at night. Add satin rollers (Hype Hair makes a great line of rollers) for soft curls, braid hair for sexy waves or twist into multiple loose buns for a loose Victoria's Secret look. These techniques will all add
